About this class

Nostalgic for the years when analog films were still being developed and printed in-house in cellars and storerooms, or curious how such old practices work?

In our all-day photo course in Berlin, we will develop your black and white films together and, after drying, create a printed contact sheet from which you can then create your own hand print (photo print).

Program overview:

  • Black and white film development in a development drum (1x 35mm or 120mm from Ilford; Rollei, Agfa, Fomapan, etc.) - approx. 1.5-2h
  • Preparation of a contact sheet with an overview of all photos of the developed film + image analysis - approx. 1.5h
  • Select an image and print it using enlargers and development trays - 2.5h

There is a 30-minute snack/coffee break between film development and printing; please bring a snack

What you’ll do in the class

After a short round of introductions and exchange of experiences, I will show you how to load films into development drums before we guide your films through the chemical process together based on the development times and then hang them up to dry.

There is a coffee/snack break during the drying process

After the break, I'll give everyone an introduction to enlargers, types of paper and the chemical process for printing. After all the films have dried, we will cut them and put them in storage cases. From there, we start the printing process to create a contact sheet for each participant.

With the contact sheets, you then decide on an image that can be printed in a maximum size of 24x30cm.

All prints can be taken home the same day as long as they are dry or sent home by post.

Analog photography is an old art and with my courses I hope to awaken the nostalgia factor for older generations and to spark a fire for this practice among young people too!

Eden is a very patient and clear teacher. I took part in a black and white print workshop and loved what we created and learnt. Eden accompanied us so we had final prints we could be proud of, and I look forward to returning to learn with Eden again.

With so much patience and dedication, Eden taught us the art of black\ white printing for the finished picture. We worked with test strips, made contact prints and tried out different exposure times on the magnifier to play with contrast and sharpness. It was a wonderful, decelerating experience that shows you how much magic there is in analog photography. I would love to take part in a color workshop too. Thanks for everything Eden!
