About this class

Have you already gained initial experience in pottery and would now like to implement your own projects? In the open workshop in Telgte near Münster, you can independently make pottery, try out modern glazes and use the firing service. High-quality equipment is available to you.

I am on site and would be happy to support you with tips — but I cannot offer intensive support.

Since I mainly work with clay suitable for Raku, it is possible that you can also make vessels or sculptures for Raku firing while “doing pottery yourself.” In this case, your works will not be glazed on the same date, but will first be fired in an electric oven (scrubbing at 950 degrees). At a later date, we will then process your works with Raku glaze so that they can be fired in the Raku oven the next time.

For this option, please book your additional option during the booking process.

Alternatively, you can glaze your works directly on site and I will then burn your pieces.

Raku is a ceramic distilling technique developed in the 16th century by Korean tea ceremony master Sen no Rikyue.

In contrast to the electric kiln, where the fire lasts up to 2 days, in a gas-powered oven, the pieces are heated to 1060 degrees within 1 hour, then taken out of the oven glowing and placed in a barrel of sawdust, where they remain without oxygen supply for a short time. The drop in temperature of over 1000 degrees causes the glaze to pop open and create craqueles in the glaze, which make every workpiece unique. In addition, a number of chemical processes also affect the workpiece, so that there can also be shiny or iridescent effects.

Burning Raku is an adventure with an incomparable experience. The Raku fires themselves are taking place in Davensberg, where my pottery colleague Angelika Faust will support us. As the Raku fire is dependent on the weather, these fires only take place from March to October.

If you are interested in a Raku brand, you can add the Raku Brand add-on to your booking.
