Discover Museum Island Berlin
From Germany's first museum building to the self-reflective renovations of the post-reunification period: Museum Island is much more than just a UNESCO World Heritage Site — it is a place where history and culture merge in a unique way. On this tour, we explore what the collections and buildings reveal about the development and significance of museums.
Our tour mainly takes you outdoors across Museum Island and other nearby historic buildings. We will visit several entrance halls and courtyards, where the collections and their backgrounds will be presented to you. A coffee break in a museum café can be planned as desired.
We start our discovery tour at the Unter den Linden armoury, the current home of the German Historical Museum. From there, we visit the Neue Wache and Friedrichswerder Church. Then it's off to the Humboldt Forum, the new old castle. The trail continues past Berlin Cathedral, through the pleasure garden, to the Old Museum — the first purpose-built museum building in Germany. Finally, we explore the New Museum, the Old National Gallery, the Pergamon Museum and the Bode Museum.
During the tour, you will learn how museums have shaped cultural and political developments over the centuries. In doing so, we also take a look at how various government systems have used museums to convey their worldview. All of this is embedded in exciting stories about Berlin and German history. These insights will permanently change your view of museums.
Get to know a gem of Berlin: On this tour, you will get to know a piece of Berlin that will be a real addition to your knowledge of the cityscape not only for visitors but also for Berliners.
