Discover Berlin's Museum Island
From Germany's first purpose-built museums building to the self-reflective renovations of the post-reunification era, Museum Island is much more than a UNESCO World Heritage Site – it’s a place where history and culture merge in a truly unique way. On this tour, we’ll explore what the collections and buildings reveal about the development and significance of museums.
Our journey takes you mainly outdoors, across Museum Island and to nearby historical landmarks. Along the way, we’ll visit a few foyers and courtyards where the collections and their stories will be introduced.
We begin our discovery at the Zeughaus Unter den Linden, now home to the German Historical Museum. From there, we’ll visit the Neue Wache and the Friedrichswerder Church. Next, we head to the Humboldt Forum, the reconstructed old palace. Passing by the Berlin Cathedral and through the Lustgarten, we’ll reach the Altes Museum, Germany’s first purpose-built museum. Finally, we’ll explore the highlights of Museum Island: the Neues Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie, the Pergamonmuseum, and the Bode-Museum.
Throughout the tour, we’ll examine how museums have shaped cultural and political developments over centuries and how they continue to reflect the core values and practices of Western collections. These insights will expand your perspective on the institution of museums.
Discover a gem of Berlin: This tour offers an opportunity to experience a part of Berlin that is not only fascinating for visitors but also an enriching discovery for locals.
