Class description
In older cultures, small-format works, so-called “miniatures,” were just as valuable as large pictures. Small-format works have been almost forgotten in the course of recent art reception, completely unfairly. Working on smaller works requires a high level of concentration, is more relaxed, more meditative. In addition, floods of ideas can be implemented more quickly with less effort. Ultimately, the miniature worlds can also be used as templates for larger images. However, much of what is right when working on large formats cannot simply be transferred to miniatures, because they have their own rules — and also special challenges. Together we will explore the possibilities of the small format. The paintings range from old-master glazing techniques to experimental, informal approaches.
Date and key data:
- Date: Friday, July 21 - Monday, July 24, 2023

- Lecturer: Hinrich JW Schüler (*1964 Wittmund/Nordsee) worked as a freelance artist in Hamburg and Schwäbisch Gmünd after studying art at the University of Oldenburg; he has lived and worked in Düsseldorf since 2005. Schüler's works are in public and private collections. Hinrich JW Schüler has also worked as a speaker and lecturer in many creative fields of adult education since 1994. Hinrich JW Schüler draws on an almost endless pool of knowledge about art history, art and painting, which he readily and very professionally passes on to his painting students. He meets course participants on equal footing. Hinrich JW Schüler is Northern German, direct, yet without exception appreciative. He never expresses criticism without at the same time offering support or an individual solution for further action. The artist has the gift of showing his painting students ways out of seemingly complicated and blocked creative situations and works.
Please note that this course takes place over 4 consecutive days.

PLAN:A Atelier Anne Schwabe
What initially began as a passion and with attending various artistic seminars developed into a freelance work as a visual artist. My work focuses in particular on free and (figurative) abstract painting.
