Overview drawing the figure clothed

We always warm up gently in the studio with a coffee and a croissant :) … then on to the task of learning looking and drawing! Our studio is intimate and our tutors are either qualified teachers to a Master in fine art degree level or a experienced and established artist. Class numbers are kept small to a max of 6 to ensure the highest level of interaction and participation and 1-on-1 time with the tutor.

This one day workshops led by artist Emily Morey will present you with the fundamentals of representational drawing, this is a unique opportunity to work in our intimate traditional oil painting studio and will consist of a small group of 6 artists/students. Emily will introduce you to several techniques that will help you measure your model and learn how to evaluate proportions. Emily will do live demonstrations to help even the least confident student come out of their shell.

During this day students will have the opportunity to explore the clothed model through intense looking, understanding and making of marks; using the folds and patterns of the fabric as a gateway to explore and build the body on your paper.

The class will commence with warm up exercises to flex your drawing muscles and focus your mind. The variety of starting points will challenge and keep students on their toes, awake and alert, to all the possibilities.

After the warm up you will start by exploring and challenging line, before working with tone to carve the figure out of your paper, building and erasing to create form, consider your light source and work out where the shadows are falling in order to create areas of depth and contrast before moving into colour and how different hues might be used to challenge the perspective of the pictorial plaine.

This class aims to foster self-confidence and enjoyment of drawing in a stimulating studio environment. It is an ideal class for beginners and those looking to learn new approaches as there is plenty of guidance from the tutor and interactive demos. It is highly suitable for those applying for residencies, art school or those wanting to maintain a regular drawing practice.

The class concentrates on building observational drawing skills focussing on each of the formal elements: Line, tone, shape, texture, pattern and space and colour, through fast paced and sustained drawing exercises and there will be opportunities for experimentation according to each individual’s interests.

At the end of the day you will have a rich broad selection of drawings to take home and add to your portfolio.

‘I’m so glad to have found this beauty of an art school. So far I’ve attended the winter oil course and the portrait in oil workshop and I can’t wait to do more. Louise (and Jesse) have been excellent teachers, enabling and inspiring me to explore painting- something I’ve had on my list for a very long time. Thank you Burnt Sienna!” Testimonial from Rachel Foreman 2021
